“How cheaply the new Carlos Saladrigas wants to buy us!” Fidel Castro wrote in 2008, at the age of 81, after illness had forced him to hand over political power to his brother Raúl and devote himself to churning out his Reflections in state media. According to Castro, Saladrigas, a successful Cuban American businessman from South Florida, was trying to take over Cuba “with Miami money.”
